Program Design

The geriatric fellowship is administered by the University of Florida and the Gainesville VA Medical Center. Each year four geriatric fellows are accepted. The program is directed by Candace Worsham, MD.  The program provides flexibility to meet the needs and goals of individual fellows and can be modified to develop areas of expertise and interest. The optional second and third years are devoted to research, education, and /or administration.

Education

The curriculum covers aging's biological and psychological dimensions through lectures, conferences, seminars, journal clubs, Grand Rounds, and coursework, complemented by hands-on experience in clinical care, research, teaching, and administration.

Clinic

Care is provided to a heterogeneous patient population, ranging from robust to frail and independent to dependent, across diverse social, ethnic, and economic backgrounds, in settings including ambulatory sites, community skilled nursing facilities and nursing homes, and acute care consultation services. Fellows participate as members of interdisciplinary teams, teach and supervise medical students and house staff, and graduate well-prepared for the ABIM/ABFP certification examination in Geriatric Medicine.

Research

Research projects are tailored to each fellow's individual interests and may be clinical, laboratory-based, psychosocial, epidemiologic, health services, or policy-oriented in focus. Close collaboration between fellow and mentor enables both the development and execution of a research project and the acquisition of expertise in a specific area, such as sarcopenia, frailty, exercise physiology, memory disorders, or stroke rehabilitation.
